LAKE CITY, AR (KAIT) - A local fire department is expanding, and with a recent grant to help afford new equipment, Lake City will be even better equipped to keep its citizens' safe.
Three additional firefighters and some updated equipment will allow the department to answer more calls more efficiently.
The fire department currently has 27 members after the city council recently voted to allow the expansion.
In October, the department received a Rural Service Grant of $15,000.
That grant will fund half of the departments new turnout gear, which Mayor Jon Milligan said is in need of the update.
It's all in an effort to better serve the entire community.
“The fire department is in really good shape, it’s clean, and twice a month they meet and all the equipment is started and checked and it’s ready to go whether it’s a fire or whether it’s a wreck on the highway,” Milligan said. “It’s for our citizens, it’s the convenience and the quickness and the response time, it’s all about response time.”
Milligan said getting the grant wouldn’t have been possible without City Clerk Linda Simpson and Fire Chief Chris Snyder.
