BAY, AR (KAIT) -A World War II veteran in California, Duane Sherman, wants cards for his birthday on December 30.
And Rachel McFarland’s second grade class at Bay Elementary School is answering the call.
McFarland said that her parents saw the story online and suggested that she had her class send Sherman a card.
“It’s for them to remember what a veteran is," McFarland said. “And what they do for us, and how people may be inspired to be veterans, or to be serving our country.”
The kids not only made a big card for Sherman, but drew pictures and wrote messages to him.
McFarland says that good citizenship is what she hopes to instill in her students.
“It seems to get put on the backburner just because there’s so many things that they have to learn,” McFarland said. “But when they have to go out in the real world, being a good citizen and being our future is one of the most important things.”
McFarland taught her students the story of Pearl Harbor and why it’s important.
She said she’ll be mailing the gift out soon.
