JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Winter weather could be headed our way, and Jonesboro’s street department is already prepping for potential road dangers.
While they don’t do anything with pre-treating the roads, the street department is still staying busy.
They’ve already loaded four of their trucks with sand and magnesium chloride, and they’ve also attached snow plows so they’re ready to go if roads get bad.
Street Department Director Steve Tippett said they don’t focus on pre-treating because of how often it rains before severe weather in our area.
“We tried it [pre-treating roads] for a couple of years, but it’s a little expensive when you lose your material down the drain,” said Tippitt.
Tippitt said the street department has been preparing for the possible weather since Thursday, and they’ll be watching the weather closely throughout the weekend.
“I’ve made all of my department aware that we would go to our snow crews," said Tippitt. "We have two crews that we run and if it starts, we’ll go to a 12-hour shift until we get it off the roads.”
Tippett said if there is ice on the roads and you have to drive, just take extra care and give yourself plenty of time.
If you see the road department working, slow down and give them plenty of room.
