Community center under construction

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - The renovation of the IMAD Community Center in Newport has some updates that local youth will soon be able to enjoy.

IMAD, which stands for “I’m Making a Difference", is a non-profit organization that was established four years ago in Jackson County.

Their purpose is to help the youth and elderly live a better quality of life and help ensure they have access to education.

The organization offers summer youth programs, youth development, life skills, a feeding program, GED prep program and after school programs.

Founder and CEO of IMAD Phillip Brown said he really enjoys being able to give back to the community and is currently making some updates to the building.

“We’re getting some things that are kid friendly,” Brown said. “We’re doing some plumbing, working on the bathrooms and on the floors.”

Brown said the community center building has a city park next to the property which allows the youth to get exercise.

The after-school program is geared towards reading and math for Kindergarten through Fifth grade students.

“Reading is so fundamental at those stages," Brown said. "Which is why we wanted to start from Kindergarten to Fifth grade.”

Brown also said they are thankful for all the community support to help make the organization possible.

Proceeds raised for the community center are from IMAD Village Grill.

The IMAD Chicken Shack will open in January 2019.
