Caruthersville man accused of killing his wife pleads not guilty

CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KFVS) - A man wanted for the murder of his wife has turned himself on, according to Caruthersville Police.

According to the Caruthersville Police Department, 57-year-old Dennis Green Sr. turned himself in on Wednesday, Dec. 19 for the murder of his wife 58-year-old Debbie Jo Whitaker.

Green is charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

Green appeared in court on Thursday, Dec. 20 and he pleaded not guilty.

He stated he will be hiring counsel and his counsel status hearing is set for Thursday, Dec. 27.

He’s currently lodged at the Pemiscot County Justice Center and has no bond.

According to Police Chief Tony Jones, they found Green’s car behind his house and they believe someone may have taken him somewhere else.

Police were called to a home in the 400 block of E. 14th Street around 7 p.m. on Dec. 16.

According to Chief Jones, witnesses said Green came home and got into an argument with his wife. They went inside the home and the argument continued. Witnesses said the husband pulled out a gun and shot his wife.

He said the witnesses saw him shoot her.

The home where the shooting took place was the victim’s sister-in-law’s home, and relatives were the witnesses.

“At least three adults in the house and I’m not for sure on how many kids,”said Chief Tony Jones. “But there was-yeah, I believe there was children there. I don’t know if the kids seen it. If they were in the same room or not.”

Chief Jones said he believes she was shot in the left-side of her torso.

Chief Jones said there were at least three adults in the house at the time and he believes children were present.

They are asking Green to turn himself in. They ask that people not approach him. If anyone has any information, they are asked to contact the Caruthersville Police Department or Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Department.
