PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) -Officers need protection in order to protect the public - protection like bulletproof vests and not for police officers only.
These valuable shields are necessary for K9 officers, as well.
And one group has taken notice of that.
According to a post on the Paragould Police Department Facebook page, a non-profit organization called Vested Interest in K9s donated a vest to Paragould Police K9 officer Zyk.
The protective vest is both bullet and stab-proof and was funded by an anonymous donor.
Vested Interest is in East Taunton, Massachusetts and was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their four-legged K9 officers.
They have provided over 3,200 protective vests, in 50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a value of $5.7 million dollars. The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of age.
New K9 graduates, as well as K9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.
Zyk should get his vest sometime in the next 8 to 10 weeks.
