Red Wolves track & field wins 14 events at A-State Invitational

Press Release from Arkansas State Athletics

The Arkansas State track and field teams won 14 events at the A-State Invitational Friday inside First National Bank Arena.

“It’s January 25 and we’ve been in school for two weeks, so we are still getting the soreness out here at this meet,” said A-State head coach Jim Patchell. “What I wanted from this meet was effort and competitiveness. We got that today and we capped it off with a bunch of teams competing hard in the 4x4. Even though we are certainly not at 100 percent right now, we still had quite a few personal bests today. I was happy with our effort today and I’m proud of where we are for this time of year.”

Reigning Sun Belt Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week Michael Carr continued his stellar indoor season by winning the pole vault competition. Carr cleared 5.21m (17-1.00) to win the competition. Freshman Courtney Thomas took home his second consecutive long jump title in a home meet, winning with a leap of 7.15m (23-5.50). Rounding out men’s field event titles was a shot put first place throw of 16.89m (55-5.00), the seventh best throw in program history, by Eron Carter.

On the track, the A-State men won four events. Freshman D’Kari Smith sprinted to the top time in the 200-meter dash leading the field with a time of 22.33 seconds. Amari James clocked the top time in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.62 seconds. Reigning Sun Belt Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week Heinrich Herbst had the top time in the mile run finishing in 4:18.33. John Carder endured the 5,000-meter run in 15:37.11 to round out the first place finishes for the A-State men on the track.

In women’s track action, A-State earned six top finishes. Briana Hardiman earned the top finish in the 400-meter dash at 57.52 seconds while Andrea Perez led the 800-meter run field in 2:18.81. Anaelle Charles had the top time in the mile run at 5:01.73, Madison Grimm endured the 5,000-meter run in 18:43.31 and Emma Nwofor won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.17 seconds. The Red Wolves won the 4x400-meter relay in 3:53.33, the 10th-fastest time in program history. Nada Buntic rounds out the Red Wolves event winners with a first place finish in the pole vault at 3.43m (11-3.00).
