LITTLE ROCK, AR (KAIT) - The number of people dead so far due to the flu in Arkansas has risen again this week.
According to the weekly flu report from the Arkansas Department of Health, 17 people are now dead due to the flu, including one pediatric death.
ADH is reporting to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the flu is widespread in the state.
Since Sept. 30, 2018, 5,100 positive influenza tests have been reported to the ADH online database, with 57 counties reporting flu cases.
The majority of cases are in Baxter, Benton, Carroll, Craighead, Crawford, Hot Spring, Johnson, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Sebastian, Washington, and White counties.
The report states that the average school absenteeism rate last week was 6.9-percent among public schools.
In Region 8, counties with the highest absenteeism rates include St. Francis County sitting at 11.16-percent, Crittenden County with 9.21-percent of students absent due to the flu and Mississippi County with an absenteeism rate of 9.11-percent.
Nationwide, 36 states have reported that the flu is widespread, 11 states reported regional flu activity while 3 states reported local flu activity.
