ARDOT holds public hearing for Commerce Drive project
The Arkansas Department of Transportation held a public hearing on some pretty big possible projects Thursday.

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Arkansas Department of Transportation held a public hearing Thursday to discuss a pair of projects in the Jonesboro area.

The meeting was over the design of the Commerce Drive project.

ARDOT showed the proposed plans to widen parts of Commerce Drive from two to five lanes, as well as the plans for a new four-lane extension that will connect I-555 and Highway 49.

Brad Smithee, District Engineer for ARDOT, said these proposed plans should help to relieve a lot of the congestion area motorists see on Red Wolf Boulevard and on Highway 49.

“All that traffic, those 30-plus thousand cars a day that are traveling through there, and everybody is moving back and forth from say Farville Curve around the stadium and down somewhere, you know the mall is easy to reference in that area, and this just makes another great connector for that,” said Smithee.

ARDOT said the point of Thursday’s meeting was to see what questions or concerns the public had about the project.

If you weren’t able to come to the meeting, ARDOT has a set of maps available for this project in Jonesboro and Paragould while people can also visit the meeting’s webpage at ARDOT for details.

And the public will be able to make comments on this phase of the plans until the deadline at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 21.
