Press Release from the PBA Tour

After three years of being streamed on PBA’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame, the city of Jonesboro will be featured in the national sports spotlight with the airing of the 2019 Go Bowling! PBA Jonesboro Open finals on FS1 Sunday, March 3 from Hijinx Bowling Center.

Both the fans who attend the stepladder finals of the Jonesboro Open in person and those viewing at home on FS1, will be treated to new telecast innovations put in place by FOX Sports and the PBA. The live telecast will air March 3 at 4 p.m. CT.

FOX and the PBA have entered into a multi-year contract with the Kegel Co. for the use of its Specto technology to provide real-time ball tracking during all PBA Tour telecasts. Using the Specto technology, StrikeTrack provides a completely new experience to the viewer with visual data to support the action on screen. Viewers both in attendance and who watch on TV will see a live trace of the ball as it rolls down the lane, as well as ball speed, location and RPM, to name a few of the features.

“We are extremely excited about this new technology to debut on our PBA events,” said Zac Fields, FOX Sports Senior Vice President, Graphic Technology & Integration. “StrikeTrack is able to give insight into a match like never before to tell the story of exactly what’s happening. We believe this will take bowling coverage to another level. Designed specifically for bowling, StrikeTrack is a similar system to FlightTrack for golf, which FOX introduced in 2015 and is now a standard in golf broadcasts.”

“I’ve never seen anything like it. This lets the viewers see where the ball is going down the lane, the speed, power, and how it impacts the pins and why that resulted in a strike or not,” said PBA color analyst and Hall of Famer Randy Pedersen. “It really helps quantify my analysis.”

The 2018 Jonesboro Open played a major role in defending champion Andrew Anderson’s, 2018 PBA Player of the Year honor. He defeated Tom Daugherty of Riverview, Fla., 264-224, in the title match for his second win of the season.

The 96-player field will also have the added challenge of competing on two different lane conditions during the tournament – the PBA 48-foot Shark condition and the 36-foot Viper condition. During match play and the stepladder finals, the Shark condition will be used on the left lane and the Viper condition on the right lane.

The Jonesboro Open will consist of seven-game qualifying rounds Feb. 27 and 28 with the top 16 players, based on 14-game pinfall totals, advancing to two rounds of match play on March 1. After match play, the top five players will be determined for the stepladder finals.
