POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) - A special called meeting by Pocahontas council members on Friday discussed the town’s hospital merger with St. Bernards.
The local hospital, Five Rivers Medical Center, is now joined with St. Bernards to improve the hospital’s quality of care.
The town has been working to secure the deal since the latter part of 2018.
Pocahontas Mayor Keith Sutton said it will benefit the town’s residents in a big way.
“We’re going to provide better health care going forward with our healthcare,” Sutton said. “Probably over time will cut down on travel time between Jonesboro and here for our elderly generation.”
The meeting had representatives from St. Bernards in attendance to observe the acceptance of the ordinance.
The improvements to the hospital’s emergency room is something Sutton said needs to happen.
“It will improve through the equipment stage,” Sutton said. “It will provide better services here and not transfer to other hospitals.”
Sutton also said the effort of merging took many people from the community to accomplish and it was a joint effort.
