Escaped prisoners now sighted in Michigan

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, AR (AP) - Five prison guards were placed on leave today after two convicted killers from a high-security unit Grady escaped by putting on jail guard uniforms that are made at the prison and walking to a car that had been left for them.

The fugitives, who escaped Friday evening, were spotted in the Missouri Bootheel on Saturday but later seen in Michigan, where one of them has relatives.

Correction Department spokeswoman Dina Tyler says the five officers were on unpaid leave while the department investigates the escape of Jeffrey Grinder and Calvin Adams. Tyler would not name the five officers, but said they had been guarding the entry and exit points of the prison.

Governor Mike Beebe today called the escape "inexcusable." But he says he's waiting to see the results of the investigation into how the escapes occurred.

Tyler says Adams' mother lives in Michigan, and he has other relatives there. It was a contact with a relative other than his mother that led police to look for the fugitives in Michigan.

Adams and Grinder were each convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
