2 Arkansans to compete this week in nat'l air race

Posted: Updated:

HARRISON, Ark. (AP) - A pair of Arkansas women will spend much of this week zooming through the air. Laura Berry of Harrison and Camelia Smith of Hindsville will be 1 of 35 teams taking part in the 2009 Air Race Classic.

The race, for women only, has a long history. 1 of the first competitors in the first race in 1929 was famed flyer Amelia Earhart.

Berry, director of Institutional Research and Assessment at North Arkansas College, will be the navigator and pilot's assistant for the race, while Smith flies her 1979 Cessna 182RG. Smith and her husband own a farm at Hindsville.

This year's race, from Denver, Colo., to Atlantic, Iowa, has eight stops in between -- and 1 of them is in Arkansas, at the Russellville Municipal Airport.
