MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Sources say Memphis wrestling champ Jerry "The King" Lawler is considering another run for mayor of Memphis.
The speculation began on Independence Day at a wrestling match in Midtown. As the crowd chanted his name, Jerry Lawler asked, "Did somebody say run for mayor?"
And the crowd went wild.
Lawler told fans Saturday that he plans to make a big announcement on a local radio station later this week.
"I'll be appearing on the Young and Elder show for KIX 106 Wednesday, when I'll be making a big announcement," he said.
Lawler would not confirm if he'll toss his hat into the already-crowded special mayoral election on October 8, but sources say he's seriously considering it.
In 1999, he received 12 percent of the vote in the mayor's race against big name politicians Willie Herenton and Joe Ford.
And many sports celebrities have moved into the political arena. Wrestler Jesse Ventura was Governor of Minnesota, and resigning Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton is a former Golden Gloves Champion.
The filing deadline for the special election is July 16.
