SMITHVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Police say an 11-year-old boy who fatally shot himself last week apparently thought the revolver was a toy gun.
Lawrence County Sheriff's Department Capt. Jody Dotson says that Jace Freeman was playing cops and robbers with his 12-year-old brother when he put a .22-caliber revolver up to his head and pulled the trigger. Dotson says the boy believed the gun was a toy.
The accident happened Saturday night while the boys played in their grandmother's yard in Smithville. Jace died the next day at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock.
Dotson says the boy's brother hid the gun in the woods and made up a story to police because he was scared. He said the boy eventually told investigators what had happened.
Investigators say the shooting appears to be accidental and no charges will be filed. Police don't yet know where the boys got the gun.
