Arkansas fire chief shot at court faces felony charge

Posted:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The small-town east Arkansas fire chief shot during a scuffle in court now faces two felony battery charges stemming from the incident.

Thomas Martin, the chief investigator for the Crittenden County Sheriff's Department, says arrest warrants have been issued for Jericho fire chief Don Payne. Martin also says the small town's seven-member police department, criticized by residents for constantly writing tickets, has come back to duty after its chief said they would disband.

Neither Payne nor his lawyer could be immediately reached for comment Wednesday. A police officer shot Payne after he confronted a judge over a traffic ticket Aug. 27 at Jericho's City Hall.
