PASCOLA, MO (KAIT) - A woman's boyfriend is in police custody and expected to be charged after authorities say he struck a child in the face multiple times, causing injury serious enough to stop the child's breathing.

The child's condition is not clear at this time but Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department said the child was airlifted to Lebonheur Childrens Hospital in Memphis.

According to the news release, deputies were called to a residence north of Pascola just after 7 a.m. Wednesday morning, along with medical personnel. When they arrived, the two year old was not breathing. An air ambulance was dispatched to take the child to Lebonheur.

The Pemiscot County Sheriff's office says the mother initially told authorities she and the child were involved in a four-wheeler wreck just after 6 a.m. that morning, but authorities began a criminal investigation after getting conflicting reports.

Investigators say during the course of their further look, they learned the mother's boyfriend allegedly struck the child in the face several times causing "serious physical injury."

No names have been released yet, but Region 8 News is told the boyfriend is in custody and charges are expected to be fild by Pemiscot County Prosecuting Attorney Mike Hazel.

Region 8 News will update this page with more information as it becomes available.
