Batesville City Council proposes pit bull ban

BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) - It's been said "a dog's bark is worse than its bite," but that's not the case when it comes to pit bulls. Now, one Region 8 town wants to ban the breed! An ordinance has been brought to the Batesville City Council before but was never voted on. After several attacks already this year, citizens feel something needs to be done.

"There are a lot of pit bulls in Batesville, and they can be docile for a very long time, but then suddenly they attack for an unknown reason," says Batesville resident Kathy Huskey.

"We've had seven attacks already this year," says Batesville Council member Fred Krug, who is now looking to pass an ordinance to ban pit bulls within the city limits.

"Had a doctor here in town that lost part of his finger, and like I said it's something we feel needs to be done. Other cities have done it, and I think Batesville should do it," says Krug. The ordinance would give pit bull owners 60 days to find the dog a new home.

"I felt helpless. I wanted to reach down and grab him. You know it all happened very quickly," says Huskey.

This past April, Huskey was walking her dog Taz when she came upon a loose pit bull. "As we approached, the animal got my dog right here in the belly, and harmed him very fatally," she says.

Huskey says with numerous pits living in the neighborhood, she hasn't been able to get another dog since. "It's the unpredictability of the dogs that worries me. I could have had my two-year-old granddaughter out here. We walk on these streets together, and my grandsons. It could have been her and then what would have happened,"

But the ordinance still has to be passed by the city council, which Husky hopes passes at the next council meeting August 24th. "I believe it needs to be passed within the city limits. There are a lot of people who walk and exercise out here, and ride bikes and things like that. I saw a loose one just about two weeks ago right across the street," says Huskey.

Krug says if the ordinance passes, it will go into effect within two weeks. If a pet owner is caught with a pit bull they will be fined and issued a citation.
