JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Friday afternoon that several libraries in Region 8 will be getting grant money to renovate and buy equipment.
The money is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) under the USDA Rural Development's Community Facilities program.
In Region 8, the City of Ash Flat will receive $100,000 to renovate the fire and police station into the city's library. The City of Williford will receive $37,000 to buy library computers and equipment. The City of Corning will receive $150,000 to expand its library. The City of Parkin will receive $36,000 to buy library equipment and make renovations to the library building. The City of Cotton Plant will be receiving $132,000 to make essential renovations to the city hall/library building and make accessibility standards according to a USDA news release.
In a news release, Vilsack said "libraries are the centerpiece of rural community life, but in many cases they need additional funding to provide rural residents with computer access, modern equipment and new training and educational opportunities.
These Recovery Act investments in our nation's libraries will serve rural America for generations to come."
