KENNETT, MO (KAIT) - This February Region Eight native Sheryl Crow will turn 49. Her fans are celebrating the big event with the 11th Annual Sheryl Crow Birthday Drive benefiting Delta Children's Home.
For the past ten years, Crow's fans have donated money to a charity that means a lot to the singer. This year's drive has gotten off to a good start.
"The fans wanted to send Sheryl a birthday present, and someone suggested them to make a contribution in her name to the Delta Children's Home in Kennett," says Local Coordinator Jim Baker. He says that is how the Sheryl Crow Birthday Drive originated, and it's grown ever since.
"Sheryl thanks them for doing it, but she doesn't run it. The fans run it themselves," says Baker.
He says fans are joining in from all over the world. "The last couple years we have had contributions from Australia, Japan, Argentina, Brazil," says Baker.
All the money donated benefits the Delta Children's Home, a temporary foster facility for children. "The Delta Children's Home is an organization that can use all the money it can get. When the children come in, clothes are often needed, and sometimes medical services have to be provided," says Baker.
Fans not only donate money, but also prizes which are raffled off each week. The drive started around the end of December and will go on until February 12th, the day after Crow's birthday.
With the ultimate prize saved for last..."A guy donated a Fender custom shop stratocaster. It's the Eric Clapton Version. It's identical to the guitar he plays on stage," says Baker. He says the guitar is worth nearly 3,000 dollars, and even signed by Crow herself.
Nearly $4,000.00 has been raised so far, and fans hope it doesn't end there. "She has a unique fan base. They are loyal to her, and really concerned about the things she's concerned about. It's just been a gift and a blessing for the Delta Children's Home," says Baker.
Over the past ten years the birthday drive has raised over one hundred and fifteen thousand dollars. If you would like to help the Delta Children's Home, there is still time. The Delta Children's Home has a PayPal account set up this year for anyone wishing to contribute. Just go to http://www.paypal.com, and start an account, if you don't already have one.
