JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) Some Arkansas students may have the option of taking Bible courses during the course of their school day.
"I think it's a great idea," said Armentia Adams.
"I think that it's a really great idea because our kids are exposed to so many things," said Brenda Stainton.
On Friday, the Arkansas House ok'd a bill that would allow public schools to offer courses on the Bible. The courses would be optional for students.
"I do absolutely think it should be optional. I don't think you should be forced to take it. We have a lot of classes in school that are optional, so I think it would be a great thing really," said Adams.
"Some people may be offended if they're not that religious or something. They may have other beliefs," said Sheila Lanfair.
Not everyone agrees a course on the Bible has a place in the classroom.
Michael Trotter on Facebook says in part, "Religion is a choice , not something everyone wants taught. If you want your children to learn about God, take them to church!"
Danny Ring JR, says in part, "No, absolutely not. A study of 'religion' as a whole is ok. To narrow that study to the Bible alone is directing a path, not giving the child an option."
Gavin David-Lee Perkins says simply, "no."
The bill says the personnel assigned to teach the course shall be licensed to teach in the State of Arkansas. The bill also says the curriculum standards for an academic study of the Bible course shall meet an academic rigor and standards of other elective courses approved by the state board and requirements of the Arkansas Constitution and the United States Constitution.
