Missouri High Court To Weigh in on Concealed Guns Law

November 20, 2003 - Posted at 11:44 a.m. CDT

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - The state Supreme Court will hear arguments in January on the new concealed guns law.

The court yesterday set a January 22 hearing, with deadlines in advance for attorneys to file briefs.

The law was to take effect October 11.  But a St. Louis Circuit Judge issued an injunction preventing it from being enforced.  The state attorney general has appealed.

Circuit Judge Steven Ohmer said the law violates a section of the state constitution dating to 1875.

The law would allow most Missourians age 23 and older to receive permits from their county sheriff to carry concealed guns.  Applicants would have to pass a background check, undergo firearms training and pay a fee of up to $100.
