PIGGOTT, AR - The Civil War is returning to Region 8.
On May 1 and 2, re-enactors from all over northeast Arkansas and southeast Missouri will gather to re-enact the Battle of Chalk Bluff. Chalk Bluff is located near the Arkansas-Missouri state line in Clay County, just north of Piggott.
The Northeast Arkansas Civil War Heritage Trail Committee and Clay County will host the battle re-enactment on the actual site of this historic Arkansas battle, which occured on May 1 & 2, 1863. The Battle of Chalk Bluff was a result of the Union Army's pursuit of Confederate General John Marmaduke's Confederate troops. Federal General William Vandever had pursued Marmaduke's Rebels to Chalk Bluff, where the Confederates hoped to cross the St. Francis River into Missouri. As they made their way across, the Confederate rearguard received heavy punishment from the Federals. Although most of Marmaduke's raiders crossed the river, they suffered heavy casualties and subsequently ended the expedition. Chalk Bluff is generally considered to be a tactical victory for the Confederacy, but a strategical win for the North.
More information on the re-enactment event is available by contacting Chalk Bluff State Park at 870-598-2667, or Jonesboro historian Danny Honnoll at 870-935-9830.
