NWS: Recent Storms Spawned Unusual Number of Tornadoes

DECEMBER 6, 2005 - Posted at 8:20 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A National Weather Service meteorologist says a weather system that swept across Arkansas last week spawned an unusual 22 tornadoes in just over seven hours.

Forecaster John Robinson calls that number rare, but he said wind conditions were very favorable for tornado formation that day.

Robinson said damage he examined yesterday in northwest Van Buren and in White County was caused by tornadoes.  Robinson said he expects the 22 figure to rise.  The National Weather Service tries to confirm tornado reports for historical accuracy and to help predict other storms.
