Tennessee Bill Would Require Pimps to be Tested for HIV/AIDS

NASHVILLE, TN - Legislation that would require individuals convicted of promoting prostitution to be tested for HIV overwhelmingly passed the Tennessee House.

The three dissenting voters were Republicans Brian Kelsey of Germantown, Jimmy Matlock of Lenoir City and Joe McCord of Maryville.  The vote was 92-to-3.

Representive Ulysses Jones, Jr. of Memphis said he proposed the measure after a Shelby County judge suggested pimps should be tested for HIV just like prostitutes and those who have sexual contact with them.

The companion bill has yet to be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee.  But if the legislation becomes law, it would probably be the first of its kind nationally.
