Dash Cam Captures Butcher Knife Wielding Suspect

April 11, 2007 - Posted at 10:28 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO, AR -- Police officers use dash cams every day while on patrol.  The video cameras capture everything from routine traffic stops to events that are out of the ordinary. Dash cams were rolling when Jonesboro Police took down a knife wielding suspect and K8 News has a first look at the video.

"The way my patrol car was positioned, it was not in a good position but our dash cameras are moveable so I immediately turned the dash camera to the immediate area and actually caught some good video of the incident," said JPD Patrolman Jeremy Smith.

When JPD Officers Jeremy Smith and Michael Huskey arrived Monday morning at 1717 Henry Street...they had no idea what they would be dealing with. Suspect Gerald Pena was outside his home, wielding knives....pleading with officers to shoot him.

"He pulled a knife out of his pants and whenever he saw us, he pulled a second one out and then he actually pulled a third one out, one knife in his right hand and two in his left hand," said Officer Huskey.

Pena actually had six butcher knives on him...several stuffed in the waistband of his pants.

"We stated several times to him that it's not worth it, we'll get you some help.  We told him that several times and finally he listened to us," said Officer Smith.

But not before charging officers...waving the butcher knives.

"He charged us and we gotta do what we gotta do, but fortunately in that situation it come down to it that things worked out for the better," said Officer Smith.

Pena faces charges of drunk, insane and disorderly conduct and was arrested for attempted suicide by cop.
