LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A House committee has advanced a measure that calls for a once-a-year sales tax holiday for certain clothing purchases.
The bill's sponsor, Rep. Tiffany Rogers of Stuttgart, says the measure will boost shopping and help Arkansas compete with neighboring states that offer sales tax holidays.
The bill calls for the sales tax exemption on the first Saturday in August on clothing items that cost $75 or less. The Department of Finance and Administration estimates that the holiday would cost the state $1.6 million, along with a $500,000 impact on local sales tax collections.
The measure passed the House Revenue and Taxation Committee on Tuesday and now heads to the House floor.
