Alternative funding sought for new West TN riverport

Posted:

UNION CITY, Tenn. (AP) - Officials say they are encouraged that alternative funds will be approved for a proposed riverport near Tiptonville.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has turned down an application for a $35 million grant for the facility.

Officials told the Union City Daily Messenger that dredging of the Cates Landing harbor is almost finished. The work is being done by Choctaw Transportation Co. of Dyersburg, which won a contract awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Additionally, riverport officials said they are proceeding with talks with the Cooper T. Smith Corp. of Mobile, Ala., about managing the riverport, which would be built on an oxbow of the Mississippi River.

Obion, Dyer and Lake counties have provided about $2 million toward construction.
