Tornadic Damage Rating Upgraded to EF4

REGION 8 STORMCENTER (KAIT) -  Damage at Mountain View, Clinton and Northeast Clinton has now been upgraded to EF4.  The damage in Zion and Highland was listed as just enough to make it EF3.

Ratings are not of the tornado but of the damage it caused.

An EF3 has winds of between 136-165 mph, with severe damage such as floors of houses destroyed or trees debarked.

An EF4 has winds of between 166-200 mph, with devastating damage that can level newer houses and create "missiles" such as thrown cars or telephone poles.

Only one EF5 has ever been reported.  It was in Greensburg, Kansas on May 4, 2007.  The city was 95% destroyed and 11 people were killed.

Alan Gerard, a member of the National Weather Service quick response team, surveyed the storm/tornado damage in Arkansas today to determine the specifics of the deadly storm.  Damage was surveyed from Atkins to Clinton, Mountain View and Highland.  Now, the National Weather Service says that a single tornado may have moved through all of these areas.

An aerial survey will be conducted Saturday to determine if the destruction was the result of one tornado or several others.

The Region 8 StormTEAM's Ryan Vaughan will have the latest details on this on Region 8 News at 6 and 10.
