SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) - The Kansas City Royals have signed pitcher Sidney Ponson to a minor league contract and invited him to their major league camp in Arizona.
The 32-year-old right-hander is expected to compete for a spot in the rotation as the Royals look to add depth to their pitching staff.
Ponson pitched for the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees last season, and most recently made two starts for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic.
He also has pitched for Baltimore, San Francisco, St. Louis and Minnesota since coming to the league in 1998.
Ponson is expected to compete with Brian Bannister, Horacio Ramirez and Luke Hochevar for two open spots in the Kansas City rotation. Gil Meche, Zack Greinke and Kyle Davies appear to have already sewn up spots at the top of the rotation.
