Valentine retires from Travs

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Bill Valentine is retiring from the Arkansas Travelers after four decades with the team.

Valentine was the Travs' executive vice president for 33 years. Before that, he worked as a broadcaster for the team.

He became the Travelers' general manager in 1976 and held that post until two years ago when Pete Laven took over.

"I've been in baseball for almost 60 years," said Valentine, who was a major league umpire before returning to Little Rock to join the Travs. "Over the past couple of years, I think the daily grind has gotten to me a bit. Most nights I have been the last person to leave the ballpark, and I'm usually here seven days a week. I've just gotten tired."
