Studies indicate New Madrid Fault might be losing strength

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - New studies indicate the New Madrid Fault might be losing strength.
Scientists at Purdue and Northwestern universities believe the New Madrid seismic zone is shutting down or that seismic activity is shifting to adjacent faults in the region.
However, this online map of the area shows dozens of quakes within the past six months.
Other quake experts say the conclusions are premature, in part because the eight year study was based on data from just ten sites in a relatively short time period.
