NEW YORK (KAIT) - A Region 8 man has taken his acting skills to the top and is demonstrating them on Broadway - in the lead role of West Side Story!

Matt Cavenaugh is the lead, Tony, but this is not his debut on Broadway. This is Cavenaugh's 4th Broadway show. He made his Broadway debut as the lead in the musical version of Urban Cowboy.

Thursday night was the opening night of the West Side Story.

"It's certainly very challenging material, musically, vocally and emotionally. It's thrilling. It's arguably the greatest musical ever written and some of the most beautiful music and choreography," said Matt Cavenaugh, talking to Region 8 News from his apartment.

Cavenaugh also says it has been great working with Arthur Laurents, the author of the original book.

When Cavenaugh was 15, he says his mother took him to Jonesboro High School to see West Side Story, under the direction of Keith Falter. He says he went to see it unwillingly but was then blown away. He says this has brought him full circle to now get to perform the very same production on the grandest stage in the world.
