JONESBORO, Ark. (ASU Sports Information) - The Arkansas State women's bowling team was selected as one of eight teams to compete in the 2009 NCAA National Collegiate Women's Bowling Championship in Canton, Mich. April 9-11.
"We're so appreciative of the girls fighting through the season to get a selection back to the national championship," said ASU Head Coach Chris James. "We applaud them for their efforts, and we have business to take care of when we get back to the national tournament."
The Red Wolves finished the 2008 season as the national runners-up falling 4-2 to Maryland-Eastern Shore. Looking for another shot at a national title, ASU finished the 2009 regular season at 81-27 and with
top-5 finishes in seven of the eight tournaments of the year. The team was ranked sixth in the latest National Tenpins Coaches Association poll.
The competition will include Central Missouri, Delaware State, Fairleigh Dickenson, New Jersey City, Nebraska, defending national champions Maryland-Eastern Shore and Vanderbilt. The tournament will begin with a qualifying round in which total pinfall will determine each team's seed in bracket play. Teams will be placed in two four-team double-elimination brackets and will compete in a best-of-seven games Baker matches.
Competition will be held at Super Bowl Lanes and will be hosted by the Detroit Metro Sports Commission and the University of Detroit Mercy April 9-11. Tickets can be purchased by calling (734)459-6070 prior to the championship.
