LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- State Economic Development Director Jim Pickens said Tuesday that he received personal assurances from Toyota that Arkansas remains in the running for a new plant.
The news comes despite reports that Texas has snared the $650 million facility.
Pickens said he talked to Toyota officials in the United States after newspaper reports published Tuesday stated that the company would announce by next month that the plant would be built near San Antonio.
Arkansas officials have been aggressively pushing a 200-acre site near Marion for that facility, which is expected to employ up to four thousand people within two years.
Governor Huckabee has been invited to visit Toyota headquarters in Japan. Pickens said that the governor would be closer to arranging the trip by the middle of next week.
