Ryan to start in Cardinals' opener

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Adam Wainwright is scheduled to start for the St. Louis Cardinals' on Opening Day tomorrow, beginning a 4-game series with Pittsburgh.

Brendan Ryan will lead off and play second base. Skip Schumaker, who batted .168 against lefties last year, won't be in the starting lineup.

The Pirates are starting lefty Paul Maholm on the mound.

Rookie David Freese -- expected to be the top fill-in for injured Troy Glaus at third base -- also will start the season on the bench in manager Tony La Russa's opening-day lineup.

Wainwright gets his second try at a first opening day start after last year's start was postponed by rain.

The Pirates enter the season trying to end a string of 16 consecutive losing seasons, tied for the longest such slump in major league history.
