LOUIS (AP) - All-American Renee Montgomery had 26 points, six assists and four steals to power unbeaten Connecticut to its 38th victory by routing Stanford 83-64 in one national semifinal at the NCAA women's basketball tournament. The Huskies will try to complete their undefeated season Tuesday night when they play Louisville, which edged Oklahoma 61-59, in an all-Big East final.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Atlanta Braves began the regular Major League Baseball season by swatting three home runs off Brett Myers and beat the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 to support Derek Lowe's two-hit shutout pitching over eight innings. Brian McCann slugged a two-run homer, Jeff Francoeur (fran-KOOR') and Jordan Schafer added solo shots in the first game of the season.
CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Cavaliers avoided their first 3-game losing streak of the season by walloping San Antonio 101-81 as LeBron James scored 18 of his 38 points in the first quarter. The Cavaliers improved to 62-15 and moved four games ahead of idle Boston in the race to nail down the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) - Brittany Lincicome (LIN'-sih-kohm) eagled the final hole to win her first major, the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Cristie Kerr and Kristy McPherson tied for second, one shot back.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Jeff Gordon ended the longest winless drought of his career with a first-place finish in the Samsung 500, taking a checkered flag for the first time in 48 races. Gordon now has won 82 career victories with this one coming by more than a half-second ahead of Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson.
