CARBONDALE, Il - Four Southern Illinois pitchers combined for a 5-hit shutout against Southeast Missouri State Tuesday at Abe Martin Field. The Salukis (13-18) offense scored seven runs on 11 hits while the Redhawks (18-11) left eight men on base.
SIU scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Michael Stalter that scored Aaron Roberts. After drawing a 1-out walk, Roberts advanced to second on a single by Mark Kelly and then moved to third on a passed ball. Chris Serritella added a run-scoring double down the right field line to bring Kelly across the plate.
The Salukis added a single run in the fourth when Chris Murphy hit a sacrifice fly, plating Tony Lepore, who led off the frame with a single.
The lead grew to 5-0 in the fifth inning as Lepore drove in two with his second single of the afternoon, scoring Jordan Sivertsen and Serritella.
SIU rounded out the scoring in the seventh when Scott Elmendorf homered down the left field line. Lepore scored on the blast after previously reaching base on a walk.
Salukis starter Jimmy Cornell (2-1) allowed only three hits over six scoreless innings. He fanned three Redhawks and walked only one. Andrew Dunn, David Kington and Bryant George each tossed one scoreless relief inning to close out the game.
Corey Harness (0-1) made his third career start for Southeast and took the loss after allowing four hits and two earned runs in a career-long three and two-third innings pitched. He struck out three and issued four walks.
Tony Spencer and Trenton Moses were the lone Redhawks to notch extra-base hits with one double each.
Southeast returns to Ohio Valley Conference play with a Friday doubleheader at Murray State. The teams will wrap up the series with a single game Saturday. First pitch on both days is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Reagan Field. The Redhawks lead the OVC with an 8-1 record thus far.
