JONESBORO, Ar - The Arkansas State football team held its 10th spring practice Wednesday afternoon at ASU Stadium, suiting out in full pads for the workout that included two full-contact competition segments.
The Red Wolves ran 10 plays focusing on 3rd-and-long situations during the first competition period, before using the next segment to run 13 plays in goal-line situations.
"I thought today's practice was pretty good overall," said ASU coach Steve Roberts. "The competition portion of practice was very spirited and competitive."
The offense recorded a first down on three of the 10 plays during the third-and-long situations. Ryan Aplin completed a pass to wide receiver Anthony Robinson for a 15-yard gain, running back Tim Dunn had a 21-yard run for another first down and Andre Smith found receiver Jahbari McLennan on a 32-yard pass play.
The defense forced two incomplete passes, stopped two rushing attempts for no more than four yards and defensive end Alex Carrington was in position to make a sack on another play.
"The offense won the third-and-long situations, getting a first down on 30 percent of the plays from 3rd-and-7 or more. I was pleased with that and also pleased defensively. We ran to the football well and made some big plays. We weren't going live on the quarterbacks today, so it was hard to tell, but there was probably a sack in there. The offense and defense did some good things during that session."
During the goal-line competition, the offense scored touchdowns on five and three-yard runs by Derek Lawson, a four-yard touchdown pass from Corey Leonard to receiver Taylor Clements, a 14-yard pass from Smith to wide receiver Jarriel Norman and a seven-yard pass from Aplin to receiver Brandon Thompkins.
"The offense pretty much dominated the goal-line session, scoring every time except one, and converting a field goal on that try," said Roberts. "So we've still got to get better, but I'm pleased with where we are."
Arkansas State will practice again Friday at 3:30 p.m. The practice will include a full-contact scrimmage.
