Red Wolves tennis tops Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tn - The Arkansas State women's tennis team (12-6) topped the Memphis Lady Tigers (9-11) in a 6-1 decision Thursday afternoon in Memphis, Tenn.

"I am proud of the girls for fighting back after losing the doubles point," said ASU Head Coach Marcia Williams.  "Most of the singles matches were close at first, but each girl kept with her game plan and pulled ahead to win her match."

Roné van Wyk and Leydi Zora were the only Red Wolves duo to win in doubles play Thursday.  They defeated Sarah Irvin and Kristin Chamberlain 8-2, but ASU could not hang on to win the doubles point.

In singles play, A-State claimed all six matches.  At the No. 1 spot, Jenny Herring downed Ashley Murdock 6-7, 6-4, 10-7.  Paula Chelminska, Elné Barnard, van Wyk, Zora and Emily Laing all won in straight sets against the Lady Tigers.  Chelminska topped Marjorie Ondeck 6-4, 6-3.  Barnard defeated Amanda Brown 6-3, 6-0, while van Wyk topped Chamberlain 7-6, 6-3.  Zora defeated Irvin 7-5, 7-5, and Laing topped Lindsey Wiseman 6-1, 6-4.
