LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- An aide to the state Education Department director says a court ruling that struck down the state's school funding formula also wiped out the state's responsibility to distribute funding equally among 310 school districts.

Addressing a legislative budget hearing, Tristan Greene, a special assistant to Education Director Ray Simon, said the state Supreme Court decision last week changed the rules for state distribution of almost $2 billion dollars in school funding.

The state now distributes school funds on a per-student basis intended to roughly equalize money spent to educate Arkansas' children. Some legislators did not agree with Greene's interpretation of the Supreme Court decision.
