JONESBORO, Ark. -- A project to improve highways in northeast Arkansas is making progress. The state Highway Commission says the low bid on a piece of the project was $7.4

million. That will go to construct an interchange on US 63 at Arkansas 149 in Marked Tree.
The project will also extend the north frontage road and add a frontage road at the Arkansas 75 interchange. US 63 is a four-lane road for 44 miles from Jonesboro to Interstate 55. But only a 26-mile portion of the route is built to interstate standards, with limited-access interchanges and frontage roads.

Construction of the interchange at Marked Tree is the first step in upgrading the 18-mile section from Payneway to I-55 to interstate standards. The project could begin within six to eight weeks, and should be completed in early 2004.
