JONESBORO, ARKANSAS (KAIT) --

Many veterans in Region 8 do not live near a large VA facility. This distance keeps many eligible veterans from using this long term benefit.

Smaller satellite clinics help fill these gaps between large facilities.

The VA clinic in Jonesboro has moved...

In our area veterans can go to Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Memphis or Little rock but all of these require a good deal of travel and time waiting.

The VA clinic here in Jonesboro is a satellite of the Memphis VA...it has moved from St. Bernard's to a new location.

Jonesboro is a contract CBOC, community based outpatient clinics.and the contract was up for renewal this year and ACS got the contract, so they relocated the clinic to this location.

The old location was inside St. Bernard's aligned with the AHEC program. Under new management it has moved across town next to the Big Lots store off Wood Springs and Alexander.

Any veteran enrolled in the Memphis system or any VA system can use the new clinic or if you are a veteran you can enroll.

Dr. Keith Novak, Memphis, VA, "They are accepting new applications for veterans that want to enroll for care. They can come here and fill out the application."

As it is set up now this clinic can handle 3 Thousand enrolled patients. With the finishing out of 2 more exam rooms they can handle up to 4 Thousand enrolled patients.

Novak, "We're going to have general primary care, mental health services, laboratory and some radiology services here."

Everything is pretty much in place except the X- ray machine which is due in soon. Patients are being sent to another clinic here in town for X-rays.

When fully staffed there will be 1 full time doctor and 2 nurse practitioners. Besides physical treatment, mental help will be available also.

Dr. Novak says there will be group therapy for stop smoking and other things, "All kinds of mental health services for PTSD and depression. There is a lot of Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, combat veterans that live in this area."

Of course the important thing is to make the veterans in our area aware that the clinic has moved.

The new location is in the big lots building off Alexander and Wood Springs Road.

The hours are 8-5 Monday - Friday and the Telephone # is 870-268-6962
