ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Kyle Lohse expects to start Wednesday, two days after emerging from a bullpen session without pain related to getting hit by a pitch on the right forearm.
The Cardinals already have a fill-in starter for Tuesday, with long reliever Brad Thompson getting his first start of the season in place of Joel Pineiro. Pineiro suffered from back spasms following a workout after his last outing and will be skipped in the rotation.
Manager Tony La Russa said Monday that Pineiro was feeling better and the team was hopeful he could take his next turn on Sunday.
Lohse missed one turn because of acute pain, the after-effect of getting struck by the Royals' Ron Mahay on May 23.
