ST. LOUIS (AP) - Now that Brad Thompson's first start of the season is a success, it's back to the St. Louis Cardinals' bullpen.
Thompson worked five effective innings in Tuesday's 5-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds as the fill-in for Joel Pineiro, whose turn was skipped due to back spasms. Manager Tony La Russa said Pineiro gave him a "thumbs-up" regarding his next turn on Sunday.
Thompson would again be the backup plan, and this time on regular rest instead of coming off a 15-day layoff. The right-hander was sharper than could have been expected, needing only 62 pitches, and though he didn't get the decision the Cardinals are 18-7 in his 25 career starts.
