JONESBORO, Ar - Over 500 junior and senior high school players representing more than a dozen schools took the field Thursday afternoon as the annual Steve Roberts Football Camp got underway at Arkansas State University.
"We are very pleased to have this many young men on the Arkansas State campus this week," said Roberts. "Our entire staff is extremely excited about working with these players and helping them to improve their football skills at our camp."
Following registration, the campers hit the field at ASU Stadium and other practice fields across the campus, going through various drills during the afternoon.
The camp is the second of three camps that will be offered by Roberts and the ASU football staff this summer. The third camp, the Steve Roberts Youth Football camp, is a new camp available to youth aged 7-12 that will run from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. daily June 17-19.
The three-day camp will focus on the basic fundamentals of football. The fundamentals will be taught primarily through a six-to-eight station rotation. The camp will be broken up into 10-12 player teams, which will compete against each other daily in "wolf ball" on the ASU game field.
Daily fundamentals of football along with punting, passing and kicking will be introduced to the campers.
The Red Wolves' 2009 season gets underway Sept. 5 when ASU hosts Mississippi Valley State in the first of five home games. Season ticket information can be found online at AStateRedWolves.com or by contacting the ASU Ticket Office at 870-972-ASU1.
