Jonesboro, AR (KAIT) -- Cleared for takeoff! Tuesday afternoon, the Jonesboro Airport Commission gave the go-ahead for SeaPort Airlines to land here. The commission will now make their recommendation to the Department of Transportation. The DOT has the final say. At a meeting Tuesday afternoon, the Jonesboro Airport Commission said SeaPort Airlines is the one they want to be the new air carrier for Jonesboro.
Portland based SeaPort plans to offer 3 trips to Memphis a day, and officials say SeaPort would be willing to offer charter services as well with enough notice.
Airport Manager, Philip Steed, says the possible opportunities ahead are very exciting.
"We have some flexibility with them that we've never had before. They're flying more modern aircrafts and they're really a strong company," said Steed.
Steed says the DOT will be notified that SeaPort is the commission's choice by the end of the week.
Steed says SeaPort could be up and running by October 1st.
Steed says that depends on if, and how long it takes for the DOT to award SeaPort the contract.
