Ark. police officer shot to death at traffic stop

PLUMERVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Authorities have identified the Plumerville police officer shot to death when he pulled over a stolen pickup truck.

Plumerville Mayor Ed Paladino says Officer Joey Cannon died after pulling over the truck on U.S. 64 in the Conway County town Friday morning. Paladino says Cannon was a police officer in the city for about nine years and had 27 years of law enforcement experience.

Bill Sadler, a spokesman for the Arkansas State Police, says troopers responded a little before 7 a.m. to a call that an officer had been shot. The sheriff and prosecutor plan to brief reporters Friday afternoon. Paladino says the shooting is the worst thing to happen in his small town in more than 100 years, when a candidate for U.S. Congress was shot to death.
