KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Zoo has made several improvements to its facilities, allowing visitors to get closer to some of the animals and to cool off on an air conditioned trails.
The zoo has enclosed the existing 750-square foot lion viewing area and installed a 5-ton air conditioner on the 1-mile circuit around the African exhibits trail.
The project was funded with a $200,000 gift from the Kansas City-based Deramus Foundation.
The zoo has also built three outdoor decks along the African Plains exhibit with a roof for shade and benches for resting.
They also get people closer to the animals.
A fourth deck is planned for next year near the African aviary.
