Police warn of extortion emails

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police say several local residents have been targeted in an email extortion scam.

The e-mails are from someone who claims to be a hit man with a contract out on you.  In the e-mail the sender offers to not kill you if you send him more than the amount listed in the contract.

Memphis Police Deputy Chief Joe Scott said several of the e-mails asked for $70,000.

"They will give you an account sometimes for you to put money in, or they will tell you to send money to a certain location

Scott said the spammer also often asks for personal information.

"Stealing your identity is all they are trying to accomplish," he said.

Scott said 11 people in Memphis have received the e-mails, however instead of responding, they called police.  Several people in other parts of the country have been scammed.
